In this session, we explore strategies for making technical presentations that are engaging and interactive. As the title suggests, we’ll devote particular attention to effective visual design of slides, such as Powerpoint. We’ll also address special considerations for presenting complex content in ways that are user-friendly to your audience.

Katie Homar is the Director of Academic and Engineering Writing Support with North Carolina State University’s Graduate School, where she designs and delivers writing-oriented professional development programming for graduate and postdoc trainees across disciplines. Prior to joining the NC State in 2018, Katie was a Brittain Postdoctoral Fellow in Georgia Institute of Technology’s Writing and Communication Program. With a PhD in English from the University of Pittsburgh, Katie has taught writing to college-level students for nearly a decade and enjoys the opportunities to learn about research across disciplines and help trainees communicate the impact of their work to a variety of stakeholders. She is also a committee co-chair with the Graduate Career Consortium, an organization that is the “leading voice in graduate career and professional development.”
