Numerical Algebraic Geometry

Following an overview of Numerical Algebraic Geometry, some recent ongoing work will be presented:

a) Some of the numerical issues dealt in the design of software for Numerical Algebraic Geometry and some details about Bertini, the software package recently released by D. Bates, J. Hauenstein, C. Wampler, and myself;

b) Work with C. Wampler on numerical computation of exceptional sets of algebraic maps (with regards to fiber dimension) by means of iterated fiber products; and

c) Work with D. Bates, D. Peterson, and C. Wampler on numerical computation of the geometric genus of curve.

DR. Andrew Sommese

Dr. Andrew Sommese has received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey in 1973. He is the Director of the Center for Applied Mathematics with the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Sommese has received several International Honors. In 1979 he received the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, and in 1993 received the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists. The University of Dotre Dame Presidential Award was presented to him in 1997. Dr. Sommese has served on major university committees since 1992.
