What You Need To Know About Deceptive Publishers
Learn about the deceptive tactics employed by predatory publishers and conferences. These organizations exploit authors by asking for large publishing fees while providing little editorial oversight, often skipping peer review entirely. Participants will leave knowing how to avoid predatory publishers and conferences when doing information research, what to look out for when searching for a place to publish, and how the academic and research communities are addressing this issue.

Jenny Coffman (she/her) is a Research Librarian for Engineering at NC State and instructional liaison to ECE. Jenny and her research librarian colleagues offer instruction and consulting on topics such as information discovery, critical evaluation, knowledge/data/citation management, search strategies, systematic and narrative reviews, information ethics, and more. Jenny started at NC State in October 2023 and previously was a science and engineering research librarian at UVA and has a background in Chemistry.
Silvia Sheffield (she/her) is the Collections & Research Librarian for Engineering at NC State. She manages collections that support research and teaching in engineering, including books, journals, databases, standards, and conference proceedings. She coordinates the library's data management plan (DMP) review service and helps organize a workshop series on academic publishing. Silvia started at NC State in 2015 at the Natural Resources Library and transitioned to her current role in July 2022.
