The College of Engineering will sponsor five training sessions for new TA’s this fall. If you are in your first year as a TA (Regardless of how long you have been in graduate school) you are required to attend the sessions on August 30 and September 5 and at least one additional session. Experienced teaching assistants and graduate students contemplating academic careers are also encouraged to attend the seminars.

Dr. Richard Felder, Hoechst Celanese Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering, and Dr. Rebecca Brent, education consultant, will lead an interactive session designed to answer many of your questions about being a TA including “How should I handle homework and test grading?” “How should I approach recitations, labs, and office hours?” “How should I deal with cheating?” and “Where can I go for help?”.

Getting Students to Work Effectively in Teams

Dr. Lisa Bullard, Lecturer and Coordinator of Advising in CHE, will help you learn to work with student teams in laboratories and problem sessions. You’ll find out about common problems with teams and ways to prevent and manage them.
