Damir Novosel, president and founder of Quanta Technology, delivered the commencement address at the NC State Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Fall 2025 Graduation Ceremony on December 11, 2025, at Reynolds Coliseum.

Novosel is a nationally recognized leader in power systems engineering and energy infrastructure. He is an adjunct professor at NC State, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and an IEEE Fellow and Life Fellow. Over the course of his career, he has held senior leadership roles at Quanta Technology, ABB and KEMA T&D U.S., developed pioneering methods to improve the reliability and resilience of electrical power systems and earned 18 U.S. and international patents.

In his remarks, Novosel reflected on leadership, responsibility and the role engineers play in shaping resilient and secure energy systems, offering guidance to graduates as they begin the next chapter of their careers.

Ben Patton ’25 delivered the student commencement address at the NC State Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Fall 2025 Graduation Ceremony on December 11, 2025, at Reynolds Coliseum.

Patton graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Renewable Energy Systems and a minor in Renewable Energy Assessment. During his time at NC State, he served as team lead for the Solar District Cup for two consecutive years and helped establish the university’s first Solar District Cup club, serving as its inaugural president.

In his address, Patton reflected on the importance of context in engineering, leadership and life, drawing from his academic experiences, team leadership and personal challenges. His remarks encouraged graduates to approach complex problems with perspective, empathy and a commitment to sustainable impact.

Meet Ben Patton, the student speaker for the NC State ECE Fall 2025 Commencement Ceremony.
Patton’s message to the graduating class reflects the resilience, community and collaboration that define the ECE experience.

During his time in the department, Patton built strong connections, led student organizations and supported peers across the program. Three years ago, he faced a life-altering medical diagnosis that required major surgery and a long recovery. The experience reshaped his view of perseverance and the importance of relying on others. His remarks at graduation highlight how family, friends and faculty helped him return to campus and continue his path toward a career in industry.

In this spotlight, Patton shares what resilience and connection have meant to him and to the Class of 2025. He reflects on the long nights in the lab, the classes that challenged students to grow and the people who made the journey possible.

Demitry “Dima” Farfurnik, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NC State, leads innovative research in quantum computing and photonics. His work explores how light and matter interact at the smallest scales to unlock new possibilities in computing and sensing technologies.

In this Faculty Spotlight, Farfurnik shares how his research with optically active solid-state spin systems is shaping the future of quantum technology. Students play a key role in every part of his lab, gaining hands-on experience and contributing directly to new discoveries.
