Quantum Computing Tutorial

We will provide a brief tutorial about the basics of quantum computing. Starting from the postulates of quantum mechanics, quantum bits (qubits) and the behavior of multi-qubit systems will be described as a series of toy problems in linear algebra. This linear algebra framework will lead to a series of simple exemplar algorithms that highlight the potential of quantum computing devices to perform various computational tasks much more efficiently than their classical (non-quantum) computing counterparts. 

As a tutorial presentation, the speaker emphasizes that no background in quantum mechanics or quantum computing is needed. We want audience members with a vague recollection of linear algebra to come out of the talk with some initial understanding of this quickly evolving area.

Dror Baron received the B.Sc. (summa cum laude) and M.Sc. degrees from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel, in 1997 and 1999, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2003, all in electrical engineering. Since 2010, Baron has been with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at North Carolina State University. Dr. Baron's research interests combine quantum computing, machine learning, information theory, sparse signal processing, and fast algorithms.
